The Big 12 championship game features the top two teams in the conference from the 2022 football season, the 12-0 TCU Horned Frogs and the 9-3 Kansas State Wildcats.
Currently, the only other Power 5 conference that plays the top two teams, instead of pitting the respective winners from predetermined conference divisions, is the Pac-12. However, the ACC recently announced they will go to the “top two” model for the 2023 season and foreseeable future.
The way it is currently constituted, at least before the Big 12 adds Cincinnati, Central Florida, BYU and Houston next year, the two conference championship teams are guaranteed to play each other twice in the same season.
For the two respective coaches in Saturday’s matchup at AT&T Stadium, Sonny Dykes for TCU and Chris Klieman for Kansas State, their experience levels playing the same school twice in the same season are vastly different.
