The stakes were far lower the last time TCU and Georgia faced off.
TCU was wrapping up what would become just their third losing season out of 16 under coach Gary Patterson. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, were breaking in first-year coach Kirby Smart.
The 2016 Liberty Bowl seemed innocuous enough at the time, but the paths that both teams have taken from that moment to the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship couldn’t have been more different.
Looking back, it’s almost as if TCU’s 31-23 loss set them on a downward trajectory, while the win for Georgia set them on a path to national power.
