Max Carroll is shown here lining up at linebacker, though he has been all over the field in high school. The latest 2023 commit from Memphis fell in love with the Frogs, but is still loyal to his Memphis barbecue.

Four-star athlete Max Carroll is from Memphis, Tenn. While he might not be sure of the Texas barbeque, but he is certainly convinced that TCU is the school for him.

“Memphis barbeque is way better,” he said. “It is not even close.”

Barbeque notwithstanding, Carroll is especially sold on how defensive coordinator Joe Gillespie will use him in his 3-3-5 stack defense.

“Eighty percent of the time I will be outside the box, and 20 percent of the time I will be inside the box,” said Carroll, referring to the offensive “box” that is generally from offensive tackle-to-tackle in width. “They see me as a hybrid linebacker/safety type — they call it the ‘star’ position.”
