Monday Morning Quarterback: Heating up? The Frogs are on fire

Sonny Dykes brought on excellent staff members to revamp the football program, but the holdovers from the previous regime, like Malcolm Kelly and Doug Meacham (pictured), have proven just as critical to the Horned Frogs’ success (Frogs Today/Melissa Triebwasser).

If you have been keeping the frogstoday.com tab open on your computer, you know what a week it’s been.

We used to refresh Twitter anxiously waiting for the “recruiting is heating up” tweets to come. Last week it was a constant barrage of commitments over a 72-hour period that you could say without hyperbole changed the fortunes of the Horned Frogs in a way we have never seen.

As Jamie detailed in his piece, Sonny Dykes and his staff earned five four-star commitments just days before the December signing period opens, all within a three-day span.

High school prospects Jamel Johnson and Randon Fontenette followed junior-college cornerback Channing Canada and preceded Florida transfer Avery Helm. Former Aledo star and Alabama wide receiver JoJo Earle, who nearly committed to TCU out of high school, put a giant bow on the proceedings Saturday.

Things didn’t stop there, though, as tight end Jack Bech made it six four-stars in four days when he announced his intention to sign with TCU on Sunday after spending the first two years of his career at LSU and leading the Tigers in receiving as a true freshman in 2021.

It was an insane momentum swing that vaulted TCU’s recruiting class into the top 20, and a top-15 unit by signing day Wednesday isn’t out of the question.
