Fall camp is in the rearview mirror and all attention is focused on the road ahead, which starts tonight at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in Boulder, Colo.
While attention and preparation certainly has turned to Colorado, one can’t help but wonder what the Horned Frogs offense and defense look like at this point. After 25 days of training camp, no one knows better than the players who faced off against one another during all of those August practices.
Offensively, the Frogs offensive line has been praised for its growth, maturity, communication and tenacity throughout. Much has been made of the impact of offensive line coach A.J. Ricker, and for good reason, but another cause for the development was having to practice against defensive coordinator Joe Gillespie’s chaos-creating 3-3-5 stack defense.
The Frogs’ offense faced over 20 practices against a defense that brought pressures from all over the field, with disguise, during team periods, dropped eight into coverage a lot during 7 on 7, and included lots of movement during inside-run periods at practice.
“In 7 on 7, sometimes they even dropped nine guys,” quarterback Chandler Morris said.
