TCU is out in Los Angeles, preparing to play Monday night in the College Football Playoff National Championship. Saturday, we heard from the team at length for the first time since its arrival, and got the opportunity to gauge where the Horned Frogs are ahead of the biggest game any of them have played.
But when the lights go down and the microphones are turned off, what’s really going through the players’ heads? To find out, we talked to someone who has been there, former Notre Dame offensive lineman — and 2012 championship game participant — Mike Golic Jr., who now hosts the GoJo show on the DraftKings network and calls games for Learfield.
Golic ran some interesting parallels between his title-game season with the Fighting Irish and what the Horned Frogs have done 10 years later.
“I started looking at TCU’s season, and I went, ‘Huh,’ ” Golic said. “They started the season with a bunch of wins over ranked opponents, won a bunch of very closely contested games, were a team known largely for one side of the football — that featured the Heisman Trophy runner-up — and now are getting set to face the first team to try and repeat as national champions since 2012, Alabama, who came off of an incredible barnburner of a game in the SEC championship against Georgia that year, much the same way Georgia came off barnburner in the Peach Bowl against Ohio State.”
